SEPTEMBER:

  • Topic of conversation/Discussion: What is like studying physics in the U.S.? What made you a good candidate for the Research Experience for Undergraduate programs that you had been accepted?​

OCTOBER:

  • Invited speaker: GRAD-MAP representatives Robyn and Ashlee
  • Topic of conversation/Discussion: What is graduate school? Application process, GRE, financing school. Overview of the Winter Workshop 2017 is open for international students for the FIRST TIME.​​

NOVEMBER:

  • Invited speaker: Antonio Porras Valverde
  • Topic of conversation/Discussion: How was applying to the workshop? What things can we do better in our applications? How is our webinar helping you? Any feedback?​

DECEMBER:

  • Invited speaker: Henry Ngo (Fifth year graduate student at California Institute of Technology)
  • Topic of conversation/Discussion: Talk about SURF program at Caltech open for international students. How to write a proposal, contacting faculty for summer a project
In addition,
  • I will be traveling to Costa Rica. Meeting in person.
  • Topic of conversation/Discussion: Getting to know students in person. Setting up schedules for individual meetings for essay reviewing for month of January (internship application crunch time)

SPRING 2017

JANUARY:

  • Invited speaker: Jessica Kenney (REU coordinator from Space Telescope Science Institute at this time)
  • Topic of conversation/Discussion: Applying for internships. How to make your application stand out. Talk about REU program at Space Telescope Science Institute (open for international students)

FEBRUARY:

  • Invited speaker: Dr. Richard Galvez (Fisk-Vanderbilt Bridge Postdoctoral Fellow)
  • Topic of conversation/Discussion: What is Dark matter? Possibility of having four types of neutrinos. The origin of the Universe. Talk about Machine learning algorithm

MARCH:

  • Invited speaker: Dr. Jorge Moreno (Associate professor of physics and astronomy at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona)
  • Topic of conversation/Discussion: Computational astronomy. How do simulations work?

Pause: Survey for students. What would you like to see more of? Any way you see we can improve meetings? Acquiring feedback​

APRIL:

  • Invited speaker: Dr. Elisabeth Mills (Assistant professor of Astronomy at San Jose State University)
  • Topic of conversation/Discussion: What is the Milky Way composed of? A journey through our interstellar medium. Also, how to finding a mentor? Who would write my letters of recommendation?

MAY:

  • Invited speaker: Néstor Espinoza. PhD student Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile
  • Topic of conversation/Discussion: Detecting and characterizing planets outside of our solar system. Research opportunities in Chile. What is graduate school like there?
